Turkey: Antalya to Dalaman Road Trip, July 2008

The trip was amazing - simple as that. Jam packed full of things to do and not much time to get comfortable in any particular 'Pension' we ambled our way from Antalya to Dalaman in just over a week. I need more time to add text to each section and update with a map etc. so for now, the only thing going is a brief description and a load of photos!

In terms of the route, we basically 'drove' the Lycian Way which is a great trek through Turkey that you can reference away from this website. If you are looking for a decent holiday, some exercise and some great sites then I would strongly suggest trying this when the weather is a little cooler. It was amazing how few people were actually holidaying independently in Turkey despite the over supply of local small hotels desperate for the business, and it made out lives really easy and fun to just go day by day and not book anything too far ahead.

Day1: Istanbul to Side - Apendos & the Manavgat Waterfalls

Day 1 and all I can remember is a mad day full of activities - a visit to Aspendos ancient ruins, Manavgat Waterfall where we had a great late lunch by the river, and then a trip on to Side and yet more ruins by the beach and an amazing runied town that you could walk amongst!

Day2: Side to Adrasan - Perge & Termessos

On Day 2 we had a fantastic adventure around Termossos which is a decent drive and then walk/scramble up a mountain to see ruins of epic proportions framed against a beautiful - and impregnable - mountain scene. I loved this place.

Day3: Around Adrasan - Olympos, Church of St. Nicolas, Myra - and then to Kas

Again, Day 3 and a jam-packed day of activities and things to see. Olympos with it's pack-packer setup and then a beautiful set of riuns leading onto the beach - which was perfect to swim in - was breath taking and I loved this place too! After this we zipped to see St Nicolas Church in Myra which was pleasently interesting with some great mosaics and paintings still in place, and then we zipped off again to see more ruins which I think were around Kas!

Day4: Kas to Patara - Kekova & the Sunken City

Patara as a place was very relaxed and popular with the chilled out English that are not interested in Gucci or Beer. I liked this place and we experienced some wonderful food in the restaurant pictured above! The Sunken City boat tour we took in Kekova was a bit of a disappointment as you can't see much, so I would recommend skipping this stop - the great name of the 'Sunken City' is genius marketing!

Day5: Patara to Tlos - Xanthia & Saklikent

A brilliant day with a double whammy of things with the walk round Xanthia - capitol of the Lycians, and then to Saklikent and a trek 4KM up this beautiful - and almost in accessible gorge - to a small waterfall and back again. When we arrived in Tlos I felt like I had come home with a wonderful view over the valley, a great Boutique Hotel and some lovely people and food pictured in the next section!

Day6: Tlos to Oludeniz

I loved Tlos for it's rural simplicity and unspoilt beauty - and not to mention some great ruins just up the road!. Oludeniz could not have been more different with its Tourist Bars and Restaurants, but we, and especially Muge! - loved this place also. We had a few lovely beers, and astonishing view from a Hotel we just turned up at thanks to some well organised Tourist Information, and then watched a Fire Dancing display before settling down to some Gin and some dancin'.

Day7: Oludeniz to Dlayan

From Oludeniz we did a day boat trip (actually it almost turned into a night also after we lost the motor to the winch for the anchor - but that is another story), and we spent the day swimming, visiting beaches, a clod spring into the Sea, and Butterfly Valley- pictured above. A lovely day out on the water, and then back to town!

Day8: Dalyan to Istanbul

Dalyan was our last stop before home and I really liked this place. We could have used more time here to explore the winding inland waterways, and also visit the local beach where Turtles were currently laying their eggs, but we arrived, found a great little hotel with a lovely pool and chilled out for the evening/morning before heading back home to Istanbul. We had a great Thunder storm here which literally had umbrellas flying through the town centre which was pretty good fun!

I will update with more information once I have this online, and can get the time to sort it all out!
